Marten Schalkwijk studied at the University of the West Indies (Jamaica), Anton de Kom University (Dr. Sociology, cum laude) and received his doctorate from Cornell University (United States), where he was a Fulbright Fellow. He received a dissertation research award from the US National Science Foundation for his research. In 1994, he became director of the Institute for Social Research (IMWO) at Anton de Kom University. In 1997, Schalkwijk founded the NGO Institute for Framework Development and Research in Suriname (NIKOS). This institute focused primarily on civil society in Suriname.From 2006 to 2016, Schalkwijk was director of the Institute for Graduate Studies & Research (IGSR) at Anton de Kom University. On July 7, 2009, he accepted a professorship in Social Change and Development. Schalkwijk has published on topics including the colonial state, the functioning of democracy in Suriname, and development issues. He also gives guest lectures at universities in Suriname's neighboring countries.
