Amrit Publishers is a decolonial publishing house founded in 1993 by Sitla Bonoo and Sandew Hira to serve the progressive forces within the Caribbean community in the Dutch Caribbean (Suriname and the Antilles) and the Netherlands. Its mission is to publish anti-racist, decolonial, and anti-imperialist works that mainstream publishers often overlook.
Initially, Amrit focused on publishing books in Dutch, addressing topics such as the anti-racist struggle in the Netherlands, the history of slavery, and colonialism in Suriname and the Dutch Antilles. In 2018, the publisher expanded its reach by introducing English-language publications.
Looking ahead, Amrit Publishers aims to broaden its scope to include non-fiction works and amplify the voices of writers from the Global South. This includes authors from communities in the Global South as well as those in the Diaspora who face barriers to accessing mainstream media.
In the age of print-on-demand and digital publishing, Amrit Publishers seeks to build a diverse and extensive catalogue, providing a platform for a wide range of authors from underrepresented communities.
The vision of Amrit Publishers is based on a decolonial view of education. We are in the process of transitioning from a Eurocentric and universal world towards a pluriversal civilization. The foundation of a civilization is a particular knowledge base. Our books are making a contribution towards this end.
