This reader consists of 11 articles that focus on slavery and the legacy of slavery in Suriname and the Caribbean. Analysis of slavery in the Caribbean, including variations in the nature, functioning and legacies of slavery across territories with different imperial masters – including the English, Spanish and French – has a long history and has produced a very substantial literature. There is far less work on the Dutch Caribbean, including Suriname. This reader makes a contribution to increasing our attention on the Dutch Caribbean, as well as its relationship to institutional practices and themes common elsewhere in the Caribbean.

The articles are clustered around three major themes. The first theme has to do with the institution of Slavery itself. The second theme can be described as resistance to Slavery. The third theme concerns the Legacy of Slavery in various forms. Several articles provide new research lines with respect to these themes, which is why we have chosen to use the descriptive title “New Perspectives on Slavery and Colonialism for the Caribbean”.

Deze reader bestaat uit elf artikelen die gaan over slavernij en de erfenis van slavernij in Suriname en het Caraïbisch gebied. De analyse van slavernij in het Caraïbisch gebied heeft een lange geschiedenis en heeft geresulteerd in een omvangrijke literatuur. De analyse heeft betrekking op de variaties in de aard, het functioneren en de erfenis van slavernij in diverse gebieden onder verschillende koloniale heersers, inclusief de Engelsen, Spanjaarden en Fransen. Er is relatief weinig literatuur in het Engels over Suriname. Deze reader bestaat uit bijdragen die de aandacht vestigen op de voormalige Nederlandse kolonie en bijdragen die de discussies die daarbij aangekaart worden in een breder perspectief plaatsen van de discussies die elders in het Caraïbisch gebied plaatsvinden.

De artikelen zijn gegroepeerd in drie hoofdthema’s. Het eerste thema heft betrekking op het instituut van slavernij. Het tweede thema is het verzet tegen slavernij. Het derde thema betreft de erfenis van slavernij in verschillende vormen. Diverse artikelen leveren nieuwe onderzoeksvragen met betrekking tot deze thema’s. Daarom hebben de auteur gekozen voor de titel: “New perspectives on slavery and colonialism in the Caribbean”.
